Naringenin 101

If you’re aiming for that natural summer glow, look no further than Naringenin. This potent flavonoid is found abundantly in your favorite citrus fruits, like grapefruits, oranges, and lemons! It’s the hidden gem behind the magic of your morning OJ ;)
When consumed, Naringenin shows promise of improving cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, and enhancing blood vessel function. It also has the potential to help the body manage insulin more effectively and regulate blood sugar levels. Naringenin also potentially lowers the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, making it a valuable addition to your diet for long-term cognitive health. But enough about Naringenin’s potential health benefits (the list could go on), let’s talk about how it helps our skin!

Come on, glow getters!

Naringenin enhances the skin’s ability to retain moisture and improves its innate ability to repair itself, helping to maintain a youthful appearance. When applied topically, it supports the synthesis of lipids, such as ceramides and fatty acids that fortify the skin barrier. Research shows the consequential soothing effects on compromised skin and a reduction in TEWL (transepidermal water loss)!

Powerful Antioxidant
Naringenin has impressive antioxidant properties, which help protect your cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. This not only keeps your skin looking youthful and radiant, but also supports overall cellular health. How?
Free radicals are unstable molecules that contain an unpaired electron. Because of this instability, they are highly reactive and can cause damage to cells, proteins, and DNA by stealing electrons from other molecules, a process known as oxidation. Free radicals can damage cell membranes, proteins, and DNA, leading to cell dysfunction and death. Oxidative stress is believed to be a major factor in the aging process, contributing to the development of age-related conditions.
The body combats free radicals with antioxidants, which are molecules that can donate an electron to free radicals without becoming unstable themselves. This neutralizes the free radicals and reduces oxidative stress. Antioxidants can be found in various foods, particularly fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A, C, and E, and you guessed it– flavonoids like naringenin.

Heads up: exposure to environmental pollutants, such as cigarette smoke and car exhaust, UV radiation from the sun (or if you get gel manis), and chemicals in pesticides, cleaning products, and industrial waste can also contribute to the production of free radicals.

Anti-Inflammatory Benefits
Chronic inflammation is a common underlying factor in many health issues. Naringenin helps reduce inflammation throughout the body, which can alleviate conditions like acne, redness, and irritation, promoting clear and calm skin.
Immune System Support
By reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, naringenin enhances the effectiveness of your immune system. It helps your immune cells function more efficiently, providing better defense against illnesses.
