Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a type of glycosaminoglycan, a naturally occurring biopolymer. While hyaluronic acid is technically an acid, it functions differently from exfoliating acids commonly used in skincare, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). Think of hyaluronic acid as a tall glass of water for your skin! (Put the iced coffee down for a sec and take a sip of water while you’re at it ;) )
Benefits
→ Hydration: Hyaluronic acid is super effective in moisturizing the skin due to its ability to bind to water, keeping the skin plump and hydrated. One study demonstrated that HA can retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water! BIG money.
→ Anti-Aging: By retaining moisture, hyaluronic acid helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving the skin a smoother, more youthful appearance. Botox DUUUPE!
→ Sensitive-skin approved! Hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin, since it does not cause irritation or clog pores.
Skincare besties (what ingredients work well with Hyaluronic Acid!)
Like matcha and a sweet treat, there are some skincare ingredients that work fabulously together! They are still effective on their own – you can still enjoy matcha without your sweet treat or a sweet treat without matcha – but when you put them together, the results are incredible!
- Benzoyl peroxide and hyaluronic acidsome text
- Struggling with breakouts? Benzoyl peroxide will get rid of acne-causing bacteria and purge pores of excess dead cells and sebum. However, it commonly causes dryness. So avoid causing excess dryness by pairing benzoyl peroxide with hyaluronic acid!
- Try: PanOxyl and Torriden DIVE-IN Low-Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Serum
- Niacinamide and hyaluronic acidsome text
- Struggling with dry, dehydrated, or oily skin? Hyaluronic acid’s humectant properties will give your skin that boost of moisture. Niacinamide will help retain moisture. When layered together, you can prevent your skin from getting dry, dehydrated or super oily by effectively maintaining your skin barrier.
- Try: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Oil Control Serum + The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydrating Serum
- Retinol and hyaluronic acidsome text
- Struggling with dark spots, wrinkles, fine lines, or acne? Retinol increases cell turnover and boosts the collagen production. But be careful, overuse of retinol, or using too much retinol when you first get into it, will cause irritation or dryness. Avoid this by pairing it with hyaluronic acid!
- Try: Paulas Choice CLINICAL 1% Retinol Treatment and La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum
How should I apply it?
If using HA serum, take a pea-sized amount and gently apply it onto cleansed, damp skin in the morning and before bed. It’s important to use on DAMP skin before moisturizing since HA binds to water, and you don’t want HA pulling water out from your skin.!
Say “hya”…luronic acid to your new skin-plumping best friend!
