Don't Believe in Marketing. Believe in Science!

By: Carissa Lin

Have you ever struggled to find makeup that doesn’t make your skin break out? Feel like your foundation clogs your pores? Tired of feeling like there’s a layer of grease on top of your skin?

We’re here to help with our biotech-powered makeup that improves your skin as you wear it!

First, we’re giving our hats off to Kosas for being one of the pioneers of running clinical trials with their makeup. Kosas was created by Sheena Yaitanes, a painter with a science background who set out to develop a collection of skin-improving makeup items, using skin hydration as a scientific metric.

But at BiotechBeauty, we’re taking it even further. As the brainchild of Alanna Tran, a USC and UC Berkeley alum (with a degree in biology and research in biochemistry), BiotechBeauty’s makeup improves your skin in two very important ways.

Our products are clinically shown to

Our skin barrier is our skin’s first line of defense from external factors (literally, since it’s the outermost layer of our skin). A healthy skin barrier plays an important role in multiple functions, such as keeping our skin hydrated, protected, and acne-free. Our skin microbiome produces (among other things) essential lipids that help strengthen our moisture barrier.

What sets Biotech Beauty apart from other makeup brands?

BiotechBeauty isn’t like most makeup brands that market their products as “good for you.” We’ll actually prove it.

How? Through clinical trials! These are third-party research studies on human volunteers using objective, instrument-based analyses, so you know our products actually work.

Don’t be fooled!

Many brands try to get crafty with their marketing by saying their products are "formulated with X, which is known to do Y!"

BUT it doesn’t mean those ingredients are always present at an effective concentration in the formula. How sneaky! We include our biotech beauty active ingredients at efficacious levels and have third-party labs conduct studies to show the results. Read here on why clinical studies are important in skincare.

Why don’t most makeup brands back up their claims with science?

Clinical trials can be extremely expensive and add several months to the product development timeline, adding complexity to the business. This is a big challenge for brands who want to quickly develop and launch products to stay on top of trends.

Why is scientific backing important in makeup?

At BiotechBeauty, we invest in this process because we don't just talk the talk, we walk the walk when it comes to science-backed, skin-improving makeup.

It’s easy to be all talk in the beauty space. We want evidence to back up those claims. Legally, cosmetic claims must be truthful and not misleading. But, it’s up to cosmetics companies to decide whether or not they want to support their claims with clinical testing data. These claims are NOT required to be reviewed or approved by any regulatory authority before they are sold. Yikes!

The overarching lesson in cosmetic labeling: it’s easy for brands to just spout exciting claims, but not so easy to back them up. If you’re looking for results-driven products, double check with your favorite brands to see if they substantiate their claims with third-party lab studies.

Let’s get into it…

If you're a deep-dive-into-skincare junkie, it’s important that you learn the difference between consumer perception panels and objective instrument-based analyses. In consumer perception panels, users try the product and respond to a survey sharing how they perceive and report a product to have achieved whatever claims the brand wishes to make. This is where you'll see claims such as "97% of users agree their skin feels more hydrated after 12 hours." Consumer perception tests usually provide us with qualitative data, such as "skin appears less irritated" or "skin under eyes looks less puffy." This is all rather…subjective!

We’ll stick to science, please and thank you. By testing our products through objective, instrument-based analyses, BiotechBeauty is committed to making science-backed and clinically-proven claims so you can have makeup you can actually trust.

The bottom line: Most of the makeup brands we love don’t execute clinical trials.

That’s fine if we’re just looking for the basic performance of makeup. But, if you’re a skincare-obsessed glam girlie like us, you can elevate your routine with scientifically-backed makeup from BiotechBeauty that improves your skin health over time.
Our clinically-backed makeup will leave you saying, “that’s facts” (literally)!

XO,

BiotechBeauty
