AHAs, BHAs, PHAs, Oh My!

“Mom, pick me up there's so much acid here!” In a world of BHAs, AHAs, PHAs, and hyaluronic acid, what’s the difference between all these guys?

AHAs

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (think glycolic acid and lactic acid) are water-soluble acids primarily used for dead skin cell exfoliation, improving skin texture, and reducing signs of aging. They are generally better for normal to dry skin.
BHAs

Beta Hydroxy Acids (think salicylic acid) are oil-soluble acids primarily used for pore exfoliation and treating acne. They are generally better for oily, acne prone skin.
PHAs

Poly Hydroxy Acids (think gluconolactone, galactose, and lactobionic acid) are similar to AHAs but with larger molecular structures, making them gentler and suitable for sensitive skin.
Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid belongs to a group of compounds known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which play a crucial role in maintaining the structure and hydration of connective tissues. Hyaluronic acid is a versatile and essential ingredient in skincare, primarily valued for its moisturizing properties. Unlike exfoliating acids, it focuses on hydrating the skin, maintaining its moisture balance, and promoting a youthful, healthy appearance.
Safe to say– if you’re looking for the fountain of youth, you’ve found the holy trinity! Use AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs to smooth out your skin and follow up with hyaluronic acid to lock in the moisture! Just be sure to use safe amounts of each product. See our other posts to learn more.
